Gunnar Todd Rohrbacher

Gunnar Todd Rohrbacher is one of Hollywood’s best known acting coaches. He is also a highly regarded writer, director, producer and actor within Hollywood’s comedy scene, earning acclaim and rave reviews for more than twenty years. Simply put, Gunnar’s credentials for teaching comedic acting are unmatched.

He was recently voted LA’s Favorite Scripted Comedy Coach in the Backstage 2011 Reader’s Choice Poll and was also mentioned as one of the best Audition Technique teachers in the city, as well as a favorite On-Camera instructor for his Acting for Sitcoms Program.

Before launching ACS, Gunnar spent a decade teaching On-Camera Audition Technique classes in multiple venues throughout Los Angeles. Prior to teaching TV & Film Acting, Gunnar taught Improvisation and Sketch Writing for an additional 10 years. With every aspect of Comedic Instruction under his belt, Gunnar carved a niche for himself in LA’s vast teaching landscape as the “go to” Sitcom Coach.

Gunnar is an alumnus of the acclaimed ACME Comedy Theater in Hollywood, where he was a member of the Main Company. He taught all levels of improv, beginning through advanced for many years. In addition, Gunnar created and taught sketch writing courses and directed the school’s performance labs. He was also the Director of ACME’s Sunday Company of up and coming talent. In addition, Gunnar:

  • Designed and exclusively taught the “Acting for Animators” program for Disney’s Animation Studio and was a Character Consultant on two of Disney’s feature films; Meet The Robinsons and Bolt.
  • Consulted for Klasky Csupo Animation Studios (Rugrats) and wrote animation for Dreamworks/Steven Speilberg (Toonsylvania) as well as Sony Animation Studios (Megababies) and was a freelance writer for Comedy Central’s The Man Show.
  • Teaches performance and writing workshops at various comedy festivals and private acting studios around the country. Of note, he’s been a Guest Instructor at Groundlings, CalArts and the LAComedyFest.
  • Taught Commercial Improv Audition Technique as part of Talent To Go’s On Camera Commercial Class.
  • Taught Acting for Television/Film and Comedy Improv at the accredited New York Film Academy on their Universal Studios Campus.
  •  Taught Acting for Sitcoms at the accredited American Academy of Dramatic Arts.

He’s also a successful playwright and has produced and directed dozens of live shows of all kinds, including improv, sketch, actor’s showcases and one person shows.

Gunnar is a Backstage Garland Award recipient and has appeared on virtually every Comedy Main Stage in Los Angeles, including: Upright Citizens Brigade, Groundlings, ACME, Second City, Improv Olympic, Bang, National Comedy Theater, Empty Stage, Comedy Central Stage at the Hudson, HBO Workspace, The Comedy Store and The Improv. Gunnar further broadened his horizons when he Co-Directed the multi-media rock opera, The Hunchback Of Notre Dame with Vox Lumiere to sold-out crowds at the John Anson Ford Amphitheater.

As an actor (SAG-AFTRA), Gunnar starred in two pilots for NBC; Prime Time Comedy, produced by the famed George Schlatter of Laugh-In  and the semi-improvised sitcom The Weekend. In addition, he recently appeared in three short films; Numbers, Rimshot, and the award winning Boutonniere, featuring Wendi McLendon-Covey (Reno 911) and Zachary Quinto (Heroes, Star Trek) and two Web/TV Series; Girl Parts and Lipstick Jones Half Hour Hour of Power.

Rounding out his knowledge of the entertainment industry, Gunnar has worked in both Theatrical and Commercial Casting and spent two seasons as a Network Acting Coach for a prime-time NBC sitcom, where he gained essential insight that helps his students become working actors.

Gunnar is a proud graduate of the renowned Warner Bros. Comedy Writer’s Program and is a featured Comedy Expert in Judy Kerr’s Hollywood survival guide, Acting is Everything.

Gunnar was trained and mentored by some of the industry’s most respected comedy authorities including Lisa Kudrow, Cynthia Szigeti, Phyllis Katz, and Mindy Sterling.
